DNS, or Domain Name System, is the magic that makes the internet user friendly, and the greatest thing since sliced bread. These addresses are numeric, in the format A DNS server resolved your human-friendly request of facebook. Your home IP address is different though.

Your ISP has a big pool of addresses and they share them with everyone on an as-needed-basis. Thankfully DDNS providers make it dead simple to assign a memorable name to your home IP address because they update automatically as your IP address changes over time. Setting up DDNS for your home network is really simple, free, and once setup should require next to no maintenance over time.

First and foremost, you need a DDNS host. Historically the go-to solution nearly everyone used was DynDNS. However back in they did away with their free plan which was a perfect fit for the vast majority of home usersand went paid-only. Thankfully, more than a few providers have popped up to fill that free-for-the-little-guy DDNS hosting niche. Although every DDNS provider, free and paid, will provide the most basic functionality—resolving some address like yourpersonaladdress.

Some people people may want to use their own domain instead of DDNS-branded sub e. There are also other features like multiple sub-domains so you can set up multiple addresses like music. Why is this so ideal? Confirm the registration in your email. If you wish to use your own domain name you can also enter it here and follow the instructions for linking your domain name to the DDNS service.

Creating the actual DDNS entry is only half the battle when it comes to time saving and convenience. The other half is automating the whole process. By default, it is disabled. As you can see DD-WRT and many other routers come with pre-configured entries for various DDNS services but the custom entry offers the most flexibility if you have it.

Leave the rest of the settings as they are. You can find the downloads section for Dynu Systems here. Grab the appropriate application for your system in our case, Windows and download it. For a run down of the advanced settings, see this support file here. If you used to connect to your home music server while you were at work by visiting XXX. The same goes for any services hosted by the router itself.Domain names can be a personal thing.

Some people have just one, some people have lots. Whatever you choose, make sure you can remember it. I use a UK domain name registrar called reg. You can buy the domain for however long you think you need it 1 year, 2 years, etc. I have had one of my domains for over 10 years.! Now that we have a domain, we can start to configure a few more things. Firstly, make sure any emails sent to this domain are forwarded to your own email address.

We will need a service provider that the Synology can talk to automatically, so that when your external IP address changes whenever you reboot your routerthe domain name forwarding will continue to work. As you can see from the image below, there are a lot of service providers that Synology can automatically update.

Pick one from the list that you feel comfortable with, and sign up for a free account — if they have one.

The provider I use is NoIP. They have a free service, however, you need to renew the account every 30 days by just clicking a link. Also, make sure you use a very strong password. You need to create a new DNS entry for your domain name. It will redirect to your DDNS service provider hostname. Every home router is different, and some corporate ones require more than just a couple of steps.

Synology Cloud Services

This is a link to an old router I used to have, a Netgear DG You can try to find your own router from their extensive list if you like. For more advanced routers you may need a few more steps. They are valid for one year, and can be easily renewed. Did I also mention they are free. No hidden charges, completely free. You will then need to validate the domain name that you want to create a certificate for. We are almost done. We have a domain, with DDNS forwarding, and port forwarding on a custom port.

We just need to add the certificate to the DiskStation and optionally change the port numbers…. You should now be able to connect to your Synology DiskStation via your newly bought domain name. Thank you for an awesome post! Do I just port-forward to the NAS? Was working great. Any idea why that would be? Scratching my head…. I noticed that Chrome accepts the certificate once imported, Firefox however does not.

Looked at email and there is nothing however I have seen on who. Are you talking about the forwarding of emails.?Those services provide you with the address you currently use to access your synology outside your network.

The main reason for doing this for me, was to enable the possibility to add a SSL certificate and encrypt all my communications to and from the Synology. You created a sub domain ds. I might be confused but I think you may have some typos in this post. I just document what works for me hoping it will work for others in simple words and clear steps.

Best wishes, Ruth. But it just does not connect. Is this the sort of thing that might take 24 hours to propagate? Do you think this could be the issue? I would expect that it should simply indicate that subdomain. Do you know how to do this? Lastly, do you know how I can set the domain to automatically go to port ?

Currently, I always have to specify the port after typing the url, which is obviously very inconvenient. Thanks so much for putting this together. Is it possible for you to guide or help me along with slightly more elaborate steps? External address IPv4. Hola, No, no tuve problemas y funciona bien. Lo has solucionado? Como lo hiciste? One question: this worked fine on my current Synology with DSM 6.

I created a CNAME for both of them, but while the one for the new Synology works fine, the one for the old one does not seem to redirect properly. Something that maybe was not yet present in DSM 4. Great question! I checked synology official docs and could not find any limitations regarding DSM versions, so I am afraid I dont know.

Try asking them or in a synology forum! Why is it that after searching for hours nobody in the universe, considering Synology, feel the need to demonstrate how to do this with a static public IP address????

Very few people have static ip address so it is difficult to demo without and the difficult lies in dynamic ip addresses not static. Hope this explains!

Dynamic DNS allows you to direct your domain or a subdomain to a resource that is behind a gateway that has a dynamically assigned IP address. This synthetic record:. Once you set up the Dynamic DNS synthetic record, you must set up a client program on your host or server the resource behind the gateway or on the gateway itself that detects IP address changes and uses the generated username and password and communicate the new address to the Google name servers.

You can edit or delete the record with the Edit and Delete buttons next to the record. In addition most routers have software built in to detect IP changes and communicate them with the name servers. After you have created the record and configured your client software, test it by entering the subdomain and domain into a web browser or appropriate client and seeing that it connects to the correct resource.

Note : You must set a user agent in your request as well. Web browsers will generally add this for you when testing via the above url. A NAS, simply put, is a computer optimized for data storage, often with additional functionality layered on top.

Synology has two primary product lines, DiskStation and RackStation, with the former intended for home users and small offices and the latter intended for larger commercial environments. DiskStation models come with a propriety Linux-derived operating system, known as DiskStation Manager. Even the beefiest DiskStation models consume less than half what a desktop computer or full size home server would.

Your Synology NAS comes with a power cable, an Ethernet cable, drive mounting screws, and, if you have a higher end model, it may also come with hot-swap drive bay trays, and a second Ethernet cable the high end DiskStations support dual network cards for increased network throughput. For an optimum NAS experience, we recommend starting with new drives, in the largest size your budget will allow.

It is a superior option for almost every consumer scenario, hands down. To remove the face plate, simply wiggle it away from the chassis of the NAS. The plate is held in place by thick rubber fingers designed to help silence vibration and should come off easily with a first touch. Note the tabs at the top of each drive bay. Simply push the tab gentle upwards and slide the tray out. The only exception for the use of screws on the hot-swap trays is with the use of 2. The hard drives are held very firmly in place thanks to rubber grommets in the side of the trays, and the lack of hard contact between the drive and the tray thanks to the rubber buffer does an amazing job minimizing vibration.

Why two LAN ports on the larger premium models? Wherever you place the NAS it should be, ideally, a cooler area of your home ground floor and basements are great, stuffy attic guestrooms are not with hardline access to your router or network switch.

The first step is the naming of your server and the creation of the administration account. FIrst, your server name is how your NAS will appear on your network and will be listed in various applications. You can also skip this step and pick them one by one later, but given the utility of the core packages, we suggest installing them all they take up a trivial amount of space when installed. On the left hand side, you have a main menu and desktop shortcuts. The Package Center is where you can install, update, and remove applications.

Configure DDNS on your Synology DSM 6.0

If you see notifications from the Package Center, this indicates that one or more of your installed applications needs updating. The File Station is file manager that allows you to easily create and browse folders on your NAS with support for file manipulation like cut, paste, move, and delete built right into the right-click context menu.

The Control Panel is similar to the control panel on other operating systems, and includes settings for everything from the network configuration to usergroup management. The Control Panel is a great last stop for a setup tutorial, as it allows us to show you how to update the operating system of your NAS before sending you off to play around with it.

Network shares? Based on the number of disks you insert during the initial setup, the NAS automatically selects the optimum configuration for those disk to maximize your storage potential while still retaining redundancy with RAID. In addition, there are already network shares set up with the administrator account of your NAS as the default user. Further, if you installed the application packages, there are default directories for many of those packages already in place.

You can browse these directories either in the File Station app seen in the previous section of the tutorial, or just by pointing the file explorer on your PC to the name of the network share.

Alternative solution is to use cloudflaredns which ships with the necessary CLI interface for Synology compatibility: cloudflareddns-syno.

How to setup a Synology NAS Part 34: Configuring a NAS for External Access

First of all you need a domain name already using cloudflare. Download cloudflareddns. Add cloudflareddns. Edit the script below by replacing keys with the keys your retrieved earlier.

Get your record ID by pasting the updated script in your terminal and press enter. I recommendthe following guide keestalkstech. This tutorial is just top because only few of the other mentionned so clearly how to make it match with DDNS on synology! Thanks a lot, a lot, a lot :. This is not working for me. The External Access no longer displays any providers in the drop down list. Copying from a browser to the terminal can create mischief every now and then The only thing I can think of is if something broke the etc.

The setup above should still be working. Hope that helps. First thanks for this script and sorry for my bad English. When I executed the cloudflaredns. Was going well until this I get permission denied. After this no issues!

Hi Nnyan. This might be a permissions error in Synology. I had several permissions problems myself after the update and eventually reset my entire machine and installed DSM6 fresh without issues. But as long as sudo -i works, you should be fine. However, just sudo should in fact work so somethings fishy. Regarding if the update will change the files. The answer is maybe. Which means, if those specific files get updated, then yes, most likely they will be changed.

I have set up cron jobs that I can run manually that re-does all my personal changes on my NAS depending on the situation. All done. Seems to work, but how to test?
